Terra Alta/East Preston School

Due to a major water line break in Terra Alta, Terra Alta / East Preston School will be dismissing at 10:30 AM. Parents who plan to pick up students may begin to pick them up at 10:45 AM with pick up taking place in the front parking area with traffic flow similar to morning drop off. Any student 3rd grade and below who does not have someone to receive them at their bus drop off will be returned to the school until someone can come and pick them up at the school. Terra Alta Area students at Preston High School will remain in school as normally scheduled.

This evening's meeting of the Preston County Board of Education began with a large delegation of recognitions to be made, as our students continue to go above and beyond the classroom and our borders, representing at the school, county, regional and state levels. This evening the board recognized:

Golden Horseshoe Winners:

Preston County Schools and the West Virginia Department of Education is honored to announce the 2025 Golden Horseshoe winners for Preston County. Since 1931, students have been honored as Knights of the Golden Horseshoe having demonstrated exceptional knowledge of West Virginia History on the state administered exam. This year, 223 winners will join the ranks of WV citizens who have won this prestigious award. Preston's 4 winners will have an opportunity to be recognized at the Golden Horseshoe ceremony on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston, WV. Congrats to these 4 amazing students.

At approx. 4:03 PM on Monday, April 28th, 2025, County Clerk (Linda Huggins) swore in newly appointed Board Member (Mrs. Beth Noss), who is filling the vacancy created by the resignation of former Board Member Mrs. Shelley Miller. PCS wants to officially welcome and congratulate Mrs. Noss, who will waste no time, as she is now working in her newly official capacity during this evening's board meeting.

Good afternoon. Terra Alta East Preston School is holding a school-wide evacuation drill this afternoon at 1:30 pm. This drill will change our dismissal and parent pick up procedures for today. School dismissal will occur at the usual time, but parent pick up will be located at the Terra Alta Youth Center located at 102 4th Street. This will include any students who are usually picked up in the fire department/ambulance building parking lot. Those students must be picked up at the Terra Alta Youth Center as well since cars will not be permitted to enter the parking lot at the fire department. All students who are parent pick up will be escorted (walked) to the Youth Center where they will be picked up by parents. All students who ride a bus will ride their bus home as usual. Please be aware that route 7 may be congested during our drill as the police direct traffic to keep our students safe. This may also impact parent pick up. Your student's safety is our top priority, so your patience is appreciated as we work through the logistics of the drill. Please remember to alert the office by 1 pm today of any changes to parent pick up. If you must pick up your student early you must do so by 1 pm or you will have to wait and pick up the student at the Terra Alta Youth Center at regular dismissal time. We appreciate your patience and support of this important drill. Also, to parents/guardians of students who are participating in the first Scholars Summit at Preston High, doors will open at PHS at 5 pm for families to watch the quiz bowl. Awards will take place at 7 pm. Parents/guardians must pick up their scholar summit student immediately following the conclusion of the awards ceremony at PHS. Have a wonderful safe and happy long weekend (otherwise known as spring break). We look forward to seeing our students back on Tuesday, April 22nd. Thanks!
