This week is National School Social Work Week, where we honor school social workers for their role in helping students navigate social, emotional, and academic challenges. While the entire month of March is dedicated to social work as a profession, this specific week focuses on our school-based professionals, who alongside their teachers, counselors, community members and parents, are helping to shape our future. PCS is lucky to have these individuals working alongside our staff and with our students each and every day.

Preston County Schools is surveying for interest to offer a bi-weekly pick-up for summer lunches (10 milks and 10 lunches every two weeks) beginning on June 16th -All meals are chef-prepared in a licensed central kitchen. They are kid-friendly, nutrient-dense, and include both a vegetable and fruit component with each entrée. They are Individually sealed, 3-compartment frozen meals, that can either be reheated via microwave or oven. (Summer schools will be fed on-site; this is the option for non-summer school participants. Pick-up location is still TBD every 2 weeks beginning June 16th and ending July 28th - 4 pick-up dates, 40 meals and milks total - FREE for all children under age 18 not participating. These meals come 10 to a box, then you'll be provided with 10, shelf-stable milks (5 white and 5 chocolate)

Next week is Read Across America Week, celebrated from March 2nd to the 6th, beginning on the birthday of the beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss. The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading. Through our Beanstack Challenges, publicizing our local library reading challenges, and regular encouragement from staff to read for 20 minutes a day, Preston County Schools supports the importance of reading and literacy across all grade-levels. We are incredibly proud of our Kingwood Elementary Student Council for their recent donation to the Preston County Animal Shelter!

Through their leadership and teamwork, our students organized a collection of dog and cat food, treats, grooming supplies, and toys to support our local furry friends. Their generosity will make a meaningful difference for the animals in the shelter’s care.

This effort is a wonderful example of what it means to be service-minded. Our Student Council members didn’t just talk about helping others — they took action. By reaching beyond our school walls and into our community, they are learning the importance of compassion, responsibility, and civic engagement.

We are so proud of these young leaders for showing that even the smallest hands can make a big impact. Way to go, Stags!

KES: March 2-6 is Read Across America Week! Join us as we celebrate reading, imagination, and school spirit all week long! Reading opens doors, builds imagination, and helps us grow stronger every day. We can’t wait to see our Stags show their spirit all week long!

Please join PCS in celebrating and recognizing National FFA Week. FFA is the top school-based youth leadership development organization in the country, with more than one million members in all 50 states, as well as two territories, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Formerly known as Future Farmers of America, the organization was rebranded as FFA because it now equips students with the skills to pursue more than 350 careers in business, science, engineering, education, communications, policy, and more. PCS is fortunate and thankful to have such a strong representation and mentorship in FFA and through the Ag programs at PHS.

Maintenance, mechanics, & custodians report on a regular schedule, & all other students & staff will report on a 2-hour delay. Road conditions will be assessed in the morning to assess the need for possible cancellation of school. The scheduled BOE meeting will proceed as scheduled at 10 AM.

We are celebrating some incredible readers at Kingwood Elementary School!

These students have read and logged 40 books in Beanstack so far this school year — and several students pictured have gone above and beyond by reading 100 books or more!

Reaching 40 books is an impressive goal that takes commitment, consistency, and a true love of reading. Hitting 100 books? That’s extraordinary dedication! We could not be more proud of their hard work.

Reading is the foundation for overall academic growth and success. The more our students read, the stronger their vocabulary, comprehension, writing skills, and confidence become across all subject areas.

Let’s keep the momentum going! We encourage all of our Stags to continue reading and logging their minutes. Every page turned is progress made!
