Good morning. We are still celebrating National School Counseling Week. Because our theme is “Standards-Based, Student-Focused,” I want to talk to you about how the school counselor stays focused on each of you – even in a school of many students. Do you know why she tries to greet you by name each day? She wants to get a sense of how you’re feeling and she also wants you to feel warmly welcomed to school. But when she is in her office, she is learning about you. She looks at lots of school data that tells her how all of the students are doing. She looks at grades, at your attendance, your extracurricular choices and your achievements. When Mrs. Durst knows what makes you YOU, she knows how she can best help you. Is there anything you think she should know about you? Are you struggling with something or is there a success you’d like to share? Come see Mrs. Durst. She is here to listen to you.
Remember, tomorrow is “You are Marvelous as you follow your dreams” day. Your School Counselor Marvels at your bright future, so wear a superhero shirt!

Good morning. We are celebrating National School Counseling Week. As you know, our theme for this week is “School Counselors: Standards-Based, Student-Focused.” On Monday, I shared with you that we use standards to plan a school counseling program for our school. I want to tell you about one particular standard that is very important. This standard is to collaborate with families, teachers, principals and other school staff to help you be successful. I know that you have many influences in your life, including your families and other adults here at the school. We all want to work together to support you. I take that responsibility very seriously. I want our school to ensure every student feels supported as an individual and as part of the bigger school community. Do you feel supported by the adults in your life? Do you have ideas for how we could work with your families to help you have positive feelings about school? You know where to find Mrs. Durst. Have a wonderful Wednesday!
Also, tomorrow is “Dream of My Future” day, so dress up in a future career outfit

Preston County Schools celebrates National School Counseling Week. Thank you to our school counselors all that you do every single day

Good morning. We are celebrating National School Counseling Week. Yesterday, I told you that Mrs. Durst uses standards to develop a plan to support your success. Did you know there are also standards to help you learn? These are specific skills you need as you grow and gain maturity. Through exercises we may do in class, in group discussions, or even one-on-one conversations, we want to help you learn coping skills, how to work well with your fellow students, how to make informed decisions and even how to take responsibility for your actions. These are all important skills that help us be good friends, family members and, someday, employees. The poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, wrote, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters to what lies within us.” We hope we can help you cultivate what lies within you. We get excited when we see you using a skill you’ve learned – whether you’re successfully working on a group project with other students or you’re resolving a conflict. If there are some specific skills you’d like to work on, we would love to help. Have a great day!
Tomorrow is “Dreaming of Kindness” Day, so wear red, pink, or Valentine’s to help spread kindness!

Good morning. Today is the first day of National School Counseling Week. The theme this year is “School Counselors: Standards-Based, Student-Focused.” Did you know that the school counselor has standards for school counseling, just like your teachers have standards for learning? A standard is basically a way to measure excellence or quality. So, at the start of each school year, she uses these standards to develop a plan to support your success in school. She uses standards to help you build a strong foundation for learning. You may have heard of the author, Henry David Thoreau, who wrote Walden. He says that “if you build castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” That’s what we hope to help you do – to build foundations for your dreams. The standards help us do that. Do you feel like you need to build up your foundation? Come see Mrs. Durst.
Remember, tomorrow is “Follow your Dreams” day, so wear your favorite sport jersey or shirt!

Next Week is National School Counseling Week. This is always celebrated the first full week in February. National School Counseling week is a time to bring awareness to the important and unique contributions school counselors make within schools. We will have a theme for each day. Monday’s theme is “Dream Big” so wear your pajamas to school. Your teacher will have a list of the themes for each day if you forget.

Attendance calls will begin Monday, February 5. Calls for students in grades K – 8 will go out at 12 pm if a student was marked absent for a full or half day. Calls for students grades 9 – 12 will go out at 5 pm if the student was marked absent at some point throughout the day (the call will include periods absent). Calls will come from the Preston County Schools automated calling system via the county’s phone number 304-329-0580 and will include the student’s first and last name and the school the student attends. Families who have opted out of calls will not receive these calls. Questions regarding student attendance issues should be directed to the student’s school of record.

February Calendar of Events

Our school will be doing dress up days for National School Counseling Week beginning Monday, February 5th and continuing through Friday, February 9th.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on February 2 from 3:30 to 5:30.

The WVU Society of Women Engineers and the WVU Statler College Of Engineering will host a day camp for girls in grades K - 5 on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 9 am - 2 pm on the Evansdale Campus of WVU. Registration is required to attend - online at: BIT.LY/GSD2024

The basketball game against South Preston will still be played tonight at Aurora School. Let’s go Bears! The parent teacher conferences will be rescheduled.

At approximately 7:05 AM, we received notification of a transformer fire that has resulted in a total power loss loss at the Aurora School . It is being reported to be a multiple hour repair. Due to this power outage, Aurora School will be closed today. At the time of the notification, buses were already picking up students. As of 7:10 AM, Aurora area buses were instructed to stop picking up students and to attempt to return students home who have already been picked up. If no one is home to receive students, buses have been instructed to take students to the school, and the school will contact parents to make arrangements to pick up their children.
