Preston County Schools is proud of our most recently inducted, "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe." On Tuesday, June 9th, at a ceremony in Charleston, State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt was joined by Gov. Patrick Morrisey today to honor 225 8th grade students as Golden Horseshoe winners. This year's winners from Preston County were:
Alexis Atkins, West Preston School
Ainsley Feathers, South Preston School
Vada Walsh, Terra Alta/East Preston School
Myla Zinn, Central Preston Middle School (Not pictured)

Superintendent Blatt knighted students and Gov. Morrisey pinned them as members of the 95th class winners during ceremonies at the West Virginia Culture Center. The students joined the ranks of more than 15,000 students who have been knighted since 1931.

The annual Golden Horseshoe exam showcases students’ knowledge of the Mountain State's history, civics, government, geography, economics, culture and other categories. While the program is a competition, the exam meets the social studies testing requirement per W.Va. Code §18-2-9.

"The Golden Horseshoe pin symbolizes students’ dedication to academic success and becoming an informed citizen who is proud of their state heritage," said Superintendent Blatt. "Their commitment to learning and understanding West Virginia history exemplifies the qualities of future leaders who will help shape West Virginia for generations to come."

On Friday, June 5th, the Office of Child Nutrition for the WV Department of Education, funded, and invited school cooks and nutrition directors from across the state to attend a "Scratch Cooking" Training in Huntington, WV. The state recognizes that many counties are "bare-bones" when it comes to service personnel staffing, and in a push for less ultra-processed and processed foods, they developed 18 recipes, whether breakfast, lunch, or sides, that are much easier to make with staffing shortages, as well as new, tasty options for our students. Preston County Schools will be adopting a few of these to pilot next year in our menus, and we're hoping for positive feedback from our students and families. The favorites among our attendees and others were Overnight Oats, Breakfast Bowl, Cheesy Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese, and the homemade Condiments (much less sodium). Justin Hough, Director of Child Nutrition attended, and trained alongside all the cooks, and wants to thank Jackie Blamble (Aurora), Tracy Rosenberger (Bruceton), and Seth Everson (Central), for taking the time to attend this training at the beginning of their summer break. Full bellies equal productive and happy kids.
