Mobile agriculture education science lab visits Bruceton School.

This week the WV Mobile Agriculture Education Lab visited Bruceton School. While on site various grade levels rotated through activities provided by the mobile lab. On Friday, November 3rd, Jared Brewer’s class participated in an experiment to make plastic out of corn. The students were tasked with testing a new procedure for manufacturing plastic-like material using a corn base in place of the current petroleum base. Students had to decide if the new plastic is a possible alternative to current plastic. Students completed their scientific procedures developing the problem, deciding on materials needed, creating a hypothesis, formulating a procedure, and making observations to come to a conclusive decision.

The mobile ag lab visit was provided by the Bruceton School Boosters. Booster President Susan Ringer said thanks to the generous community donations through fundraising efforts such as the annual calendar party, the Boosters Program is able to provide student enrichment activities such as the mobile ag lab. The ag lab is a yearly tradition at Bruceton School for the past 4 - 5 years, including one visit in honor of the Bishoff Brothers, said Ringer. Bruceton students look forward to the tradition each year and thanks to the community it is one that will continue.

The WV Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab is a service of the WV Farm Bureau. The lab offers students new opportunities in ag science they may not otherwise receive. The lab serves grades PreK through 5 (and included middle school students at Bruceton School) with hands on activities using the scientific method (identify & discuss problem, form hypothesis, conduct experiments, collect data, and draw conclusions). The lab activities meet the WV Department of Education’s 21st Century NxG CSO education standards while providing unique, organized, and custom designed learning experiences.
